Thousand Oaks Schools
Thousand Oaks Schools are served by the Conejo Valley Unified School District, an exemplary, award-winning district. CVUSD operates four high schools, four intermediate and 19 elementary schools; 16 have been named Distinguished California Schools. Three elementaries and one intermediate have been named National Blue Ribbon Schools.

Residents of Thousand Oaks have at their disposal nearly 75 miles of hiking and biking trails scattered throughout over 15,000 acres of public green space. If that's not enough for you, the Santa Monica Mountains National Park is right next door and the Pacific Ocean is a mere 12 miles away. The mild Mediterranean climate allows for almost year-round enjoyment of all these outdoor activities. For golf lovers we have the picturesque Los Robles Greens Golf Course, among others. However, in the event that you want to stay indoors the cultural arts are flourishing here as well. We have the world-class Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza which houses the Countrywide Performing Arts Center. The Center includes an 1800 seat theater and smaller forum theater that offer a huge array of performances.
History of Thousand Oaks, CA
The City's history dates to the Chumash Native Americans who dwelled in the Conejo Valley hundreds of years ago. In 1542, the area was discovered by Spanish explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, who claimed the land for his Spanish king. The area remained virtually unsettled until the early 1800s when the Spanish governor granted 48,671 acres of land grants to loyal soldiers - land which included the Conejo Valley. (Conejo is the Spanish word for rabbit which are abundant in the area.)
By 1961 there were two shopping centers, an industrial park, schools, churches and a four-year liberal arts college in the growing town. On Sept. 29, 1964, the community voted to incorporate and selected the name, City of Thousand Oaks, honoring the abundant, majestic oak trees in the area. In the first years of Cityhood, nearly 20,000 persons lived within the 14.28 square miles of the newly drawn boundaries.
Since incorporation, the City has developed into a quality community, integrating effective planning and citizen involvement. Having grown to 56 square miles with more than 125,000 residents, City officials remain dedicated to offering an envious family lifestyle.
